Every recorded song contains two separate copyrights:

Musical Composition — the melody, lyrics, and underlying written song.

Sound Recording — the recorded performance of the song by the artist.
Even when the songwriter and recording artist are the same person, these copyrights remain separate. As a result, licensing recorded music typically requires both composition and master use approval.
